Nearly 1 million people in Gaza live in tents amid scorching heat

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said that despite the onset of summer, nearly 1 million people are still living in tents and makeshift shelters in war-torn Gaza.
The organization said that according to the Shelter Cluster, which coordinates emergency shelter assistance in Gaza and the West Bank, about 170,000 families are currently living in tents in Gaza. In addition, about 5,000 families are spending the night in the open and 52,000 families are staying in overcrowded shelters.
The NRC report said that this month, about 850,000 people still lacked emergency shelter materials such as plastic sheeting, plywood and ropes. As a result, the shelter crisis has become more acute. According to the organization, the crisis in Gaza is not only weather-related; the situation is complicated by widespread destruction, displacement and obstacles to the delivery of relief aid.
The report warns that the suffering of displaced people will increase as summer temperatures rise. Daytime temperatures in the summer can reach 34.5 degrees Celsius.
After nearly 987 days of conflict, millions of people in Gaza are still without permanent shelter. Humanitarian agencies say that unless urgent shelter provision and reconstruction efforts are stepped up, the intense summer heat could lead to a new humanitarian disaster.
