Israeli attacks continue in Lebanon despite ceasefire, residents in distress

Israeli attacks continue in Lebanon a year after the ceasefire. As a result, many who fled the country’s border areas have yet to return to their homes. Lebanese residents breathed a sigh of relief when a US-brokered ceasefire was announced last year. But in reality, peace has not returned; many Lebanese are skeptical about returning home.
Although Hezbollah has stopped attacks after the ceasefire, Israel still regularly attacks Lebanon. As a result, hundreds of thousands of residents have not yet returned to the devastated towns in the south of the country.
Millions of people fled their homes during the war in the southwestern border town of Naqoura. Zainab Mehdi, 50, is one of them. Their homes have been destroyed and their only means of livelihood, their farmland, has been damaged by the bombing. She says that they have destroyed all the houses that were still standing or the land that was in good condition after the war. They even pulled the water pump out of the ground and destroyed it. All my irrigation pumps are gone. I have nothing left.
Now, many like Zainab work in an agricultural project funded by the UN Women agency in the coastal city of Tyre. Another Lebanese woman, Munifa Aidibeh, runs a community kitchen here. She now makes a living by preparing meals for the displaced every day.
Another said, “The war is not over. We are still living in the middle of the war. The war will only end when Israel leaves Lebanon. There will be no drones in the sky; they will no longer attack homes every day.” Tel Aviv has continued its attacks, accusing the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah of re-establishing military bases. However, Hezbollah denies this claim. According to the group, Israel is continuing to attack the area to stop civilians from returning home.
The International Organization for Migration says more than 64,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon; Meanwhile, thousands of people have fled their areas this October.
