Hotelier killed on charges of banana theft
A hotelier has been accused of killing a hotelier on charges of banana stalk theft in Kaliganj, Gazipur. Locals have arrested three people in this incident and handed them over to the police. The murder took place on Saturday (January 17) afternoon in the market of former MP Jitu Mia, adjacent to the Kaliganj Municipality office. The deceased, Liton Chandra Ghosh (50), is the son of the late Nirmal Chandra Ghosh of Chandaiya village in the municipality and is a hotelier in that market.
According to police and local sources, a banana tree planted by Swapan Mia, son of the late Tara Mia of Baligaon village in the municipality, who used to rent a market behind the market, was stolen last Friday night. Yesterday morning, Swapan’s wife Majeda got into an argument with the hotel employees in the living room, demanding to find the banana stalk. At one point, Majeda called her husband and son and beat up the hotel employees. At that time, when Liton Chandra Ghosh went to save the employees, they also beat him up.
When the locals rescued Liton in a bloody state and took him to the Upazila Health Complex, the doctor on duty at the emergency department declared him dead. Later, the agitated crowd arrested Swapan (50), his wife Majeda (48) and son Masum (30) and handed him over to the police station.
Imran Khan, the doctor on duty at the Upazila Health Complex, said that Liton Chandra Ghosh was brought to the hospital in a bloody state in the afternoon and was found dead after an examination. The deceased had cuts on his forehead and blood clots in his nose. It is believed that he died on the spot after the attack.
