Hasina and Joy’s $300 million laundering to be investigated.

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Sunday decided to investigate allegations of $300 million laundering against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy. ACC Deputy Director (Public Relations) Md. Akhtarul Islam announced the decision on Sunday.

Earlier, the ACC formed a five-member team to investigate corruption allegations against Sheikh Hasina and her family members. The team will probe into allegations of corruption of Tk 21,000 crore against Sheikh Hasina and others in eight special priority projects of the Awami League government. The same team will probe allegations of corruption of Tk 59,000 crore in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

ACC Director General (Prevention) Akhter Hossain said that the commission will look into the involvement of Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, sister Sheikh Rehana and her daughter Tulip Siddique in these corruption cases.

A High Court bench had on December 15 issued a rule on why the inaction by the ACC to investigate the allegations of Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and niece Tulip Siddique embezzling $5 billion from the Rooppur nuclear power plant project through a Malaysian bank should not be declared illegal. Two days later, the ACC announced its decision to investigate the allegations, saying that the commission had received allegations of corruption worth Tk 21,000 crore in eight special priority projects of the Awami League government. Besides, the ACC had also received allegations of corruption worth Tk 59,000 crore in the Rooppur nuclear power plant project.

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 after the 15-year rule of the Awami League ended in a strong mass movement. Her sister Sheikh Rehana was also with her at that time. Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy is an expatriate in the United States. He was the IT advisor of the Prime Minister for a long time. And Rehana’s daughter Tulip is a member of the UK Parliament. After the Labour Party came to power, he was given the responsibility of Minister of State for Financial Services (City Minister) in the UK government. The International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against Hasina, Rehana and Joy on charges of committing ‘crimes against humanity, including genocide’ in suppressing the student-public movement. Additionally, the duo has been accused of murder in dozens of other cases related to the political movement.
