Attempt to stop BSBRA elections fails, no more legal hurdles in July 4 polls: High Court

Amjad Hossain Chowdhury has once again failed to gain any advantage in the ongoing legal battle surrounding the 2026-2028 elections of the Bangladesh Shipbreakers and Recyclers Association (BSBRA). Despite his latest application to postpone the elections in the High Court, he could not obtain any stay order. As a result, there is no legal hurdle to the election on July 4.

According to court-related documents, Amjad Hossain Chowdhury filed a supplementary application seeking to suspend the effectiveness of the Election Board’s order dated May 25, 2026, and the election notification published on June 29. However, after the hearing, the High Court ordered the application to be kept on record; no order to postpone the elections was issued. The lawyer’s certificate also clearly states that there is no legal hurdle in conducting the BSBRA-2026 elections.
Earlier, the Election Board had cancelled his candidacy on the issue of loan default. That decision was upheld in the subsequent appeal and judicial process as well. As a result, he lost the opportunity to participate in the election.
Election-related people say that although the election was delayed due to continuous legal processes, there is no more uncertainty after the court’s latest stand. All preparations for holding the election have been completed as per the scheduled schedule.
According to the concerned circles, the long-standing legal complications surrounding the election of a commercial organization had created uncertainty among the members. The court’s latest stand has put an end to that uncertainty. They believe that everyone should now cooperate in ensuring that the election is held peacefully, respecting the court’s decision.
