Union Parishad member lifts bricks from road and sells them!

A Union Parishad member has been accused of lifting bricks from the road in Chandraganj, Lakshmipur, and selling them for Tk 25,000. The Union Parishad member committed this incident soon after the tender for the construction of the road by placing blocks was announced. However, even after almost 4 months of lifting the bricks, the construction of the new road has not started. Due to this, the locals are suffering on the muddy road.
The incident took place in front of Rayshar’s house on the Chaupalli-Aladadpur road on the border of Hazirpara Union and Uttar Jaipur Union in Chandraganj Upazila. Locals alleged that Masud Rana, a member of Ward No. 1 of Hazirpara Union Parishad, lifted the bricks and sold them to Abdus Shahid and Ahmed Kabir of the same area for Tk 25,000.
The investigation revealed that during the interim government’s tenure, bricks were removed from the unpaved road at the initiative of the Uttar Jaipur Union Jamaat to ease the movement of people. In the fiscal year 2025-26, a tender was invited for the construction of a 578-meter road by placing blocks under the Important Rural Infrastructure Development Project.
The contractor, Arham Builders, got the job after receiving an allocation of about 70 lakh taka. On the pretext that various departments had spent money to get the road construction proposal passed, about 60-70 meters of bricks were removed and sold 15 days after the tender. Abdus Shahid and Ahmed Kabir of the same area bought the bricks from UP member Masud for about 25 thousand taka. Some bricks are visible on the opposite side of the gate of East Allahabadapur Government Primary School in the same area.
Meanwhile, due to the removal of bricks, the road has become muddy due to water accumulation. This is the road connecting Chowpalli and Allahabadapur roads. The movement of vehicles including rickshaws and motorcycles is being disrupted on this muddy road. Due to the accumulation of mud, vehicles including rickshaws have to use other roads. The public is suffering due to this.
Local residents Md. Sohag, Ripon Hossain and Md. Manik and others said that Masud member sold bricks for Tk 25,000 last Ramadan, promising to take up road work. He spent that money to get the road allocated. In addition, money has been collected from local residents several times to get the road allocated. People are suffering due to traffic jams every day, accidents are also happening.
UP member Masud Rana said, ‘I have spent about Tk 1.5 lakh on lobbying and various activities in various departments to get the road allocated. The government did not allocate the road for paving. The road was paved by Jamaat.’ They again sold the bricks to Abdus Shahid and Ahmed Kabir.’
Hazirpara Ward No. 1 Jamaat President Faizul Islam Khokon said, ‘North Jaipur Union Chairman candidate Harunur Rashid took the initiative and paved the road with bricks. Masud member got this road work passed. This cost him money. He had to pay some money, so he sold the road bricks.’
Contractor Ali Ahmed Rocky said, ‘My company got the job of constructing 578 meters of road blocks through a tender with an allocation of 70 lakh 27 thousand taka. Later, I sold the job to Jahangir Contractor. The job has a term. The work has not started due to monsoon. The job will be done.’
Laxmipur Sadar Upazila Engineer Iqbal Hossain said, ‘No one has the right to sell road bricks. Apart from that, I am not aware of the incident. An investigation will be conducted into this matter.’ If the incident is true, action will be taken against the accused.
