A suspect named Mizanur Rahman (55) has died in police custody after being arrested in an attempted rape case of a seven-year-old child in Faridganj Upazila of Chandpur. He was taken to the Faridganj Upazila Health Complex on Thursday (July 30) morning and was declared dead by the doctor on duty. The deceased Mizanur Rahman was a resident of Babu’s house in Kairatli village of the upazila.
Police said that a case was filed against Mizanur Rahman a few days ago on charges of attempting to rape a seven-year-old child. He was arrested from his house on Thursday morning in that case. When he fell ill on the way to the police station, he was immediately taken to the Faridganj Upazila Health Complex. The doctor declared him dead there.
Dr. Asaduzzaman Jewel, Health and Family Planning Officer of Faridganj Upazila Health Complex, said that Mizanur Rahman died before being brought to the hospital. No signs of injury or wounds were found on his body. It is initially believed that he died of a heart attack. Chandpur Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Lutfar Rahman said that after the arrest, the accused felt unwell on the way to the police station, so the police quickly took him to the hospital. The doctor on duty declared him dead there.
Meanwhile, Mizanur Rahman’s family has made different claims about his death. A relative of the deceased, Mamun Patwary, alleged that a group named Moshfiqur Rahman Emu, Asif Bhuiyan and Kalu Mia from Kairatlai village had been demanding a ransom of five lakh taka from Mizanur Rahman for a few days. With their connivance, the police arrested him without any investigation and mentally tortured him. The family claims that he died after being unable to bear the slander and mental stress of the attempted rape allegations.
Faridganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ershad Ullah said that the body will be handed over to the family after the legal process is completed.
