Relief must reach the people, so that no one goes hungry: Rizvi
Calling for assistance to the people affected by landslides and floods, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Political and Industrial Affairs Advisor Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that relief must reach the people so that no one goes hungry. He told reporters this while visiting the flood-hit areas of Banshkhali upazila today, Tuesday (July 14).
Rizvi said that one village after another has been submerged in the heavy floods caused by landslides. Cattle have also drowned. In all, I have seen a draft estimate of damage of about Tk 30 crore. This estimate could be more. The government is always alert and vigilant in this regard. The government is monitoring the situation around the clock. The Prime Minister has already held a virtual meeting with the local administration and civil surgeons. She has given necessary instructions after knowing the situation in the area and the state of flood water.
Regarding relief and medical services, Rizvi said that food should be provided so that relief reaches the people and no one goes hungry. He directed the civil surgeon and other doctors to quickly deliver medicines and food to flood-affected villages and houses to cure water-borne diseases, especially skin diseases, dysentery, etc. He further said that the people of this country have been dealing with this situation for ages and are still doing so. We hope that in this age of technology, this age of science, through the steps taken by the government, an effective solution will be possible by keeping the environment in order and considering the impact of climate change. He said that if a functioning natural environment is disturbed, it will die and the river must be allowed to flow at its natural speed. Canals must be preserved. Haors must be allowed to flow at their natural speed. There must be a clear flow of water. Building roads through haors will not benefit anyone. It is harming the environment, causing massive damage and is on the verge of destroying natural biodiversity. We had different types of fish in that haor, and they are also being destroyed. State Minister for Land and Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, South District BNP Joint Convener Mishkatul Islam Chowdhury Pappa, Police Superintendent Masud Alam and local administration officials were present at the time.
