The letter mentions that the Election Commission has taken the initiative to update the voter list on the occasion of various local government elections. For the purpose of updating the voter list, the Commission has fixed July 31, 2008 as the eligibility date as per Section 3(H) of the Voter List Act, 2009.
In that context, the detailed schedule for publishing the draft voter list, submitting applications for claims, objections and corrections, finalizing the applications and publishing the final voter list has been approved by the Commission. The last date for preparing the PDF of the updated draft voter list and sending the link to the concerned registration officer at the field level is August 4 and the draft voter list will be published on August 9.
The last date for submitting applications for claims, objections and corrections is August 24. The last date for disposal of applications submitted for claims, objections and corrections by the amending authority is 27th August and the last date for submission of decisions on applications submitted for claims, objections and corrections is 28th August.
The letter further states that during this process, arrangements should be made to invite the public to inspect the printed draft voter list and submit applications for correction of errors and omissions by making announcements before or after prayers at various religious places including mosques/temple and through imams/priests and this should be publicized through local journalists and cable operators in the public interest. If there are any other religious-related errors in the printed draft voter list, including inclusion of female voters in the male list and male voters in the female list, necessary steps should be taken to correct them.
At present, the number of voters is 12,83,23,240. Out of these, 65,212,731 are male voters and 63,192,266 are female voters. In addition, there are 1,243 Hijra voters.
