Youth dies in Faridpur DB police custody

The family of a youth has complained about the death of a youth in the custody of Faridpur DB police. The youth died while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital on Sunday (June 21) morning. The deceased youth has been identified as Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed Prant. He is the son of Mirza Iskander Haider, a resident of Parkhola village in Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur, and was a student of Faridpur Law College.
It is learnt that the deceased youth was associated with the banned Chhatra League. After his death, several leaders of the District Chhatra League posted pictures with Chhatra League leaders on social media Facebook, condemning the incident and demanding justice. On the other hand, the District Chhatra League posted a condolence message on Facebook, referring to Prant as one of their workers.
The family of the deceased said that a team of Faridpur DB police arrested Prant from his house on Saturday afternoon. At that time, the DB police brought him to Faridpur after saying that he had drugs with him. The police informed his family of his death in the morning. The victim’s mother, Mirza Khadija Akhter Nipa, alleged that Prant was beaten to death. She demanded a fair investigation and justice in the incident.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police Md. Nazrul Islam said that the police arrested Prant with drugs. When he felt sick in the morning, he was rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. He died there while undergoing treatment. He said that there were no signs of injury on his body. However, it is being investigated whether he was associated with any political party. In addition, the Superintendent of Police said that there are two cases against Prant under the Narcotics Act.
