Youth sentenced to death in Chandpur murder case

A court has sentenced Arif Hossain Bepari (43) to death and two years in prison for failing to pay a fine of one lakh taka in Shikarchar village of Matlab Uttar upazila of Chandpur. Additional District and Sessions Judge (Second Court) of Chandpur Md. Kamal Hossain announced the verdict on Monday (May 18) afternoon.
The deceased Wasim is the son of the late Saheb Ali Bepari of the Bepari family of Shikarchar village of the upazila. He was a trolley driver by profession. Arif Hossain Bepari, son of Taiyab Ali Bepari of the same family, has been sentenced to death. According to the details of the case, Wasim’s family had a dispute with Mizanur Rahman alias Balu Mizan’s family over land.
In continuation of this, on June 29, 2020, at around 11:30 pm, Mizanur Rahman called Wasim from his house and hacked him to death with a sharp weapon sometime during the night and threw him into the bushes next to the dam of the irrigation project next to the house. The next morning, the family found his body. In this incident, Wasim’s mother Jahanara Begum (60) filed a murder case against six people at Matlab Uttar Police Station on June 30.
The accused in the case are – Mizanur Rahman alias Balu Mizan (45), son of Taiab Ali Bepari, Arif Hossain Bepari (43), Md. Azad Bepari (40), Md. Karim Bepari (38), daughter Salma Begum (27) and Md. Quddus Bepari (25), son of Mosharraf Bepari of the same house. The then Sub-Inspector (SI) of Matlab Uttar Police Station was in charge of investigating the case. He completed the investigation of the case and submitted the charge sheet to the court on May 31, 2021.
Kamal Uddin, the state’s lawyer in the case, said that the testimonies of 25 people were recorded during the case in the court. The judge gave the verdict in his presence after reviewing the evidence, case documents and the guilty pleas of the accused. The other accused were acquitted from the case as their guilt was not proven. The other state’s lawyer was Harunur Rashid and the defendant’s lawyer was Jabir Hossain.
