Border killings and barbed wire fence, says Nasiruddin Patwari

National Citizen Party chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari has expressed concern over the new barbed wire fence and border killings on the India-Bangladesh border in a Facebook status. He posted it on his verified page on Monday (May 11). Patwari wrote, “The recent initiative to allocate land for new barbed wire and build a dividing wall on the India-Bangladesh border has created new concerns not only about the relations between the two countries, but also about the future of the entire South Asia.”
He referred to the border as “not just a line on a map, but a matter related to human life, human rights and family ties.” He has raised the killing of unarmed Bangladeshi citizens over the years as a question of human conscience. Patwari further wrote, “We believe that in a civilized world, border management is not done through fear, bullets and dividing walls; it should be guided by mutual respect, human values and responsible diplomacy.”
Recalling the centuries-old history, culture and human relations between the people of Bangladesh and India, he said, “No action is desirable that creates distrust and distance between the people of the two countries.” Making a strong appeal to the Bangladesh government, Patwari said, “Effective diplomatic action should be taken regarding the killings and human rights violations on the border and the issue should be raised strongly in the international arena.”
At the end of the status, Patwari wrote, “Today, South Asia needs solidarity, not conflict; cooperation, not walls; trust, not fear. A peaceful, stable and prosperous South Asia can only be built on the basis of human rights, people’s dignity, justice-based diplomacy and mutual respect.”
