BNP leader beats up chairman over rice

Local BNP leader Mostafizur Rahman has been accused of beating up a female panel chairman in Char Fashion, Bhola, over the issue of preparing a list of VGF rice distribution for fishermen. Panel chairman Minara Begum and her husband Abul Kalam Faraji were seriously injured in the attack and are undergoing treatment at the Char Fashion Upazila Health Complex.
The incident took place on Friday (April 10) night in Char Manika Union Parishad No. 9 of the upazila. According to sources from the Upazila Senior Fisheries Department, 1,936 tons of rice were allocated for the full settlement of fishermen in the upazila in February and March. Out of this, 96 tons of rice were allocated for the 1,200 registered fishermen of Char Manika Union Parishad. The responsibility of this distribution was given to Panel Chairman Minara Begum.
Panel Chairman Minara Begum said that during the preparation for the distribution of VGF rice according to the list of registered fishermen, former joint general secretary of the local BNP, Mostafizur Rahman, gave a fabricated list excluding the names of the actual registered fishermen. He created pressure for the distribution of VGF rice according to the list he gave. When I told him that a decision would be taken in consultation with the Upazila Executive Officer regarding the list he gave, Mostafizur Rahman got angry and attacked me with his team. Then my husband Abul Kalam came forward and beat him up too.
On receiving the information, the police of Dakshin Aicha Police Station reached the spot and rescued the injured panel chairman Minara Begum and her husband Abul Kalam Faraji and sent them to Char Fashion Hospital.
Accused BNP leader Mostafizur Rahman said that the local fishermen got angry and beat him up because of irregularities in the VGF rice distribution list of the fishermen. Humayun Kabir, the second officer of Dakshin Aicha Police Station, said that after receiving information about the scuffle between BNP leaders and activists and the panel chairman over the preparation of the VGF rice distribution list, the police went to the spot, brought the situation under control and sent the injured to the hospital. Executive Magistrate Imadul Hossain, who is in charge of the Assistant Commissioner Land and Upazila Executive Officer, said that both parties have been called to the upazila in this incident.
