Bank manager sentenced to 15 years in prison for embezzling 3.5 crore taka in Noakhali
A court in Noakhali has sentenced a former bank official named Belayet Hossain to 15 years in prison for embezzling 3 crore 39 lakh 97 thousand taka from Rupali Bank. Judge Shawkat Ali of the Noakhali Special Judge’s Court announced the verdict on Wednesday (April 8) afternoon. However, the accused was not present in the court when the verdict was announced. An arrest warrant has been issued against him.
ACC Court Inspector Mohammad Idris confirmed the matter and said that accused Belayet Hossain was working as the manager of the Amishapara branch of Sonaimuri upazila of Rupali Bank district from 2012 to 2016. During his service, he forged the signatures of 56 customers and withdrew 3 crore 39 lakh 97 thousand 94 taka through various means. Later, he embezzled that money.
Later, the bank authorities filed a case with Sonaimuri police station on May 4, 2016. After a lengthy investigation into the case, the ACIC filed a complaint in the court in 2023. After the hearing, the court sentenced the accused to 5 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 409 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1860, 5 years under Section 468, and 5 years under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. Action will be taken in this regard later.
