College student dies over land dispute

Barisal: A college student died after being seriously injured in an attack by opponents over a land dispute in Bakerganj of the district. The deceased, Saidul Islam Sajeeb (25), was a resident of Lochnabad village in Rangashri union of the upazila and was a postgraduate student of Government Barisal College. Officer-in-Charge of Bakerganj Police Station, Khandaker KM Sohel Rana, confirmed the matter on Tuesday (March 31) morning. Earlier, he died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 2 am.
The family of the deceased said that last Saturday morning, when they started construction work on their land, opponents from the same area ambushed them. It is alleged that 8-10 hired attackers armed with sharp weapons and sticks attacked and vandalized them.
Sajeeb was seriously injured in the attack. He was first taken to the local health complex and later to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. When his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Dhaka, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Sajeeb’s father Abul Hossain Khan, mother Piara Begum and several other family members were injured in the incident. They received treatment at a local hospital. After the incident, the deceased’s father filed a case against 8 people at Bakerganj Police Station. However, no one has been arrested so far.
Police said that the clash took place between the two parties over a land dispute and both parties have filed separate cases. The entire incident is under investigation and efforts are being made to arrest those involved. There is extreme tension in the area over the incident. Locals have demanded that the culprits be brought to justice quickly.
