Husband sentenced to death for killing wife in Jamalpur
A court in Dewanganj, Jamalpur has sentenced a husband to death for killing his wife. This order was given by Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahim of the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-1 of the Jamalpur District Judge Court on Monday (March 30) afternoon.
State lawyer Fazlul Haque said that Sujana Akhter married Aminul Islam of Beluachar village of Dewanganj upazila through family ties in 2018. Since then, her husband Aminul had been torturing Sujana from time to time for dowry. On April 24, 2022, Aminul Islam demanded 20,000 taka from his wife Sujana Akhter. When she refused to pay dowry, she was beaten. Later, she was kicked in the stomach and lower abdomen and died the next day on April 25 while undergoing treatment.
On the same day, the deceased’s father Suraj Mia filed a murder case with Dewanganj police station. The state presented 13 witnesses in the case. In addition, the accused gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, in which he admitted to killing his wife. The state expressed satisfaction that the court awarded the maximum penalty of death and a fine of Tk 1 lakh to the accused as the charges were proven based on the evidence.
