Superstar Vijay to contest from two seats in Tamil Nadu assembly elections
Ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections in India, actor-turned-politician Vijay Thalapathi’s party ‘Tamilga Vetti Kazhagam’ has announced its list of candidates. Vijay himself will contest from two seats – Perambur and Trichy East.
While announcing the names of his party’s candidates, Vijay made a strong appeal to the people of Tamil Nadu to give TVK a chance. Referring to the party’s election symbol ‘flute’, he called the elections a ‘flute revolution’ and requested the voters not to discriminate between him and the other candidates of the party.
Polling will be held simultaneously on April 23 for 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly. The current ruling DMK is facing a five-party fight. While the AIADMK and BJP’s NDA alliance are desperate to return to power, Vijay’s TVK is gearing up for a grand debut. The PMK and Sasikala-led Fourth Alliance and Seeman-led NTK are contesting alone. The two seats Vijay is contesting from, Perambur and Trichy East, are currently held by the DMK.
In his speech, Vijay sharply criticized the DMK, saying that his party’s candidates come from ordinary families and have no experience of corruption. He indirectly accused the DMK candidates of corruption and promised to act as the “protectors of the people”.
He described the election as a two-way fight between his “people’s alliance” and MK Stalin’s alliance. Vijay’s election promises include making Tamil Nadu drug-free, providing monthly allowance to unemployed people after the age of 29, and enacting new laws to ensure transparency in the government recruitment process.
Other key candidates for the party include VS Babu, who will contest against Chief Minister MK Stalin from Kolathur. Former Congress leader Selvam has been fielded against Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin from Chiplun. Party general secretary Adhav Arjun will contest from Villivakkam and Sengottaiyan from Govichettipalayam. All in all, Vijay’s political debut has taken the electoral equation of Tamil Nadu to a new and interesting turn.
