Iran seeks China-Russia support at UN
Iran has called on China and Russia to take a firm stand at the UN against the US and Israeli aggression. The country’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused the US of using the Security Council for its own interests and this needs to be stopped. In a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday (March 24), Araghchi discussed the regional situation and the consequences of the US-Israeli military attack on Iran.
During the conversation, Wang Yi condemned the US and Israeli military attacks on Iran on behalf of the Chinese government. At the same time, he expressed his condolences over the assassination of Ali Larijani, former Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. He also called him a patriotic and influential leader.
Regarding the Middle East crisis, Araghchi said that the main cause of the current regional crisis is the US and Israeli aggression. Iran will continue to resolutely resist to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian Foreign Minister said that the security of this important waterway is linked to the situation in the entire region. He claimed that the military actions of the United States and Israel have created instability in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi also said that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed to US and Israeli ships. However, the passage of ships from other countries is being done in coordination with the relevant Iranian authorities.
He alleged that the UN Security Council has failed to fulfill its duties and is criticizing Iran instead of holding the real aggressors accountable. In this situation, he called on member states, including China and Russia, to take a firm stance. In response, Wang Yi said that China respects international law and diplomacy, advocates the settlement of disputes, and opposes unilateral hegemonic behavior.
