Section 144 imposed in Jhenaidah over Iftar Mahfil of two BNP groups
The upazila administration has imposed ‘Section 144’ in the fear of clashes over Iftar Mahfil of two BNP groups at the same place in Kaliganj, Jhenaidah. This instruction was issued on Sunday (March 8) morning in the field behind Lata Stand on Naldanga Road in the municipal area.
Locals said that Saiful Islam Firoz, an independent candidate in the parliamentary elections who was expelled from BNP, had organized a prayer and Iftar Mahfil at that field. When the Upazila Executive Officer applied to the administration regarding this program, the administration initially gave verbal permission.
However, at the same time, Rashed Khan, the candidate of Paddy Sheesh, counter-applied for permission to hold Iftar Mahfil at the same place. At the same time, extreme tension spread in the area due to the stubborn stance of both parties at the same place. In this situation, fearing major untoward incidents or clashes, the upazila administration imposed Section 144 in the area from 6 am to 8 pm today and banned all kinds of meetings, rallies and mass gatherings. Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rejewana Nahid said that this decision has been taken in the interest of public safety and to maintain law and order. Additional police have been deployed in the concerned areas.
