Husband in jail, wife divorced in shame
A wife divorced her husband after he was involved in a crime like killing wild animals in Patharghata, Barguna. This sensational incident has now become a topic of discussion in the area.
Shahinur Begum (40) sent a divorce notice on Tuesday (March 3) afternoon. Md. Hanif (45) was arrested last Monday night with two slaughtered deer.
According to forest department sources, forest guards conducted a surprise raid in the Badurtala canal area of Patharghata Sadar Union last Monday night. At that time, Md. Hanif was arrested red-handed with two slaughtered deer and 9 special traps from an engine-powered trawler. Although he is a resident of Haritana village in Patharghata Sadar Union, he had been living in ward number 7 of the municipal town for a long time.
After the arrest, Hanif was produced before the Patharghata Senior Judicial Magistrate Court, where Judge Md. Panir Sheikh sentenced him to one year of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 50,000. He was given another month in prison for non-payment of the fine.
On the court’s orders, the seized deer skin and antlers were formally preserved and the meat was buried mixed with kerosene.
Hanif’s wife Shahinur Begum was socially ashamed of this criminal act. She said that Hanif used to fish in the sea. But recently he got involved in deer poaching dishonestly. Despite repeated prohibitions from the family, he did not listen to it.
Shahinur’s younger brother Zahirul Islam works as a gardener in the Patharghata Sadar BIT office of the forest department. Expressing his anger, he said, “It was becoming difficult for me to work in the forest department because of Hanif’s illegal business.”
