Two locals clash in Muktagachha, 20 people including police injured
A clash took place between two locals in Muktagachha, Mymensingh over a trivial incident. To bring the incident under control, the police lobbed sound grenades and dispersed both sides. About 20 people from both sides, including 5 policemen, were injured in this. Clashes between locals have been going on since the evening of Saturday (February 28).
According to local sources, there were repeated clashes between residents of Paratongi area and Tarati union in Atani Bazar Chhoto Masjid area of Muktagachha, and attacks and vandalism continued on shops. Initially, Muktagachha police tried to control the incident but failed and the situation went out of control.
Later, around 10:30 pm, Muktagachha police station and district police, RAB-14 and 2 armed police battalions reached the spot and conducted a joint operation. When the police lobbed sound grenades to bring the situation under control, both sides dispersed. Currently, a large number of law enforcement forces are deployed at the spot. The situation in the area is tense. Police and locals have rescued the injured and admitted them to Mymensingh Police Hospital and Muktagachha Upazila Health Complex.
According to police sources, an argument broke out between an autorickshaw driver from Paratongi area of the municipality and brick kiln trolley drivers over traffic congestion in the Atani Bazar Chhota Masjid area of the upazila municipality on Friday afternoon (February 27). At one point, a resident of Tarati area and a trolley driver beat up the autorickshaw driver. Later, the autorickshaw driver left the scene and went home. Later in the evening, the autorickshaw driver came to the Atani Bazar intersection with his gang and vandalized a shop. When the incident came to the notice of the people of both areas, the incident spread among the residents of the two areas.
Meanwhile, to avenge the incident, residents of Tarati area of the upazila heated up the situation in Atani Bazar area yesterday evening with sticks and country-made weapons and attacked and looted several shops belonging to the people of Paratongi. On receiving the news, the residents of Paratongi area also came forward with sticks and country-made weapons, which led to clashes between the residents of the two areas.
When the locals informed the police, the Muktagachha police reached the spot, but the situation took a more dangerous turn. To control the situation, the Muktagachha police took refuge in the Mymensingh District Police. A team of the District Police, RAB and DB police reached the spot and conducted a joint operation. At one point, the police lobbed multiple sound grenades to disperse both sides and brought the situation under control.
About 20 people from both sides, including 5 policemen, were injured in the incident. The injured policemen were rescued by locals and the police and admitted to the District Police Hospital and the rest to the Upazila Health Complex. A large number of law enforcement forces have been deployed at the spot and the situation is tense across the area.
Eyewitnesses said that from last Friday afternoon to Saturday night, there were attacks on multiple shops and clashes between the residents of the two areas over trivial incidents such as throwing bricks and an auto-rickshaw driver crossing the road. The people of Tarati area are always fierce and they commit one or two such incidents every year.
Regarding the incident, Mankon UP Chairman Shahidul Islam told us that there was a violent clash between the people of Paratongi of the municipality and Tarati area of the union next to Mankon. Although the matter was a trivial incident, it spread among the people of both the areas and took a massive shape. It caused extensive damage to both sides and many people were injured and admitted to the hospital. The situation is normal now.
In this context, Muktagachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Lutfar Rahman said that there have been repeated clashes between two locals over a trivial incident. Police were sent to the spot after receiving the information. The number of police was much less than the presence of both the parties in the clash. The situation has been normalized with the help of the district police to bring the incident under control. Several shops have been vandalized. However, the extent of the damage cannot be said right now. Legal action will be taken after investigating the matter.
In this context, Upazila Executive Officer Krishna Chandra said that the situation has been brought under control with the help of the district police, RAB and armed police in the repeated clashes between the two locals. The current situation is normal and law enforcement agencies are deployed at the scene. Regarding the incident, District Superintendent of Police Md. Mizanur Rahman said, the situation is under control due to a joint operation by multiple law enforcement agencies including the police and RAB. A large number of law enforcement members have been deployed at the scene to deal with any situation. Legal action will be taken after a proper investigation of the incident.
