Dispute over making MP the chief guest, BNP leader beaten to death

A BNP leader was beaten to death following a dispute between two factions of the party over making local MP Abu Sayeed Chand the chief guest at the Islami Jalsa in Charghat, Rajshahi. The incident took place on Friday (February 27) night in Sipaipara village of Yusufpur Union of the district. It is learned that the deceased, Ershad Ali (65), lives in Sipaipara area. He is a member of Yusufpur Union BNP. Ershad is known as a follower of local MP Abu Sayeed Chand.
According to local sources, after Friday prayers yesterday, local people sat down to discuss organizing a mahfil at the mosque. At that time, one faction wanted to make former convener of the district Jubo Dal Anwar Hossain Ujjal the chief guest, while Ershad and others wanted to make local MP Abu Sayeed Chand the chief guest. At that time, the discussion broke down due to arguments between the two factions. Two and a half months ago, the mahfil was postponed due to a dispute over the same issue. Four people were injured in the fight. A case has also been filed in this regard.
Family members of the deceased Ershad Ali said that Ershad Ali was returning home after Tarawih prayers at around 9 pm. At that time, some followers of Anwar Hossain Ujjal blocked his path. At one point, he was beaten with tree branches and sticks. When he was taken to the hospital, the doctor declared him dead. Later, his body was taken home. However, Anwar Hossain Ujjal did not comment on the matter.
Meanwhile, Charghat Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sirajul Islam said, “Legal action will be taken for the autopsy of the body.” When asked about this, Rajshahi-6 (Bagha-Charghat) constituency MP Abu Sayeed Chand said, “This is an undesirable incident. Whoever is involved in this, they will be brought under the law and exemplary punishment will be given.”
