Former Chhatra League leader dies after falling ill in jail
Former Dumki Upazila Chhatra League president Shafiqul Islam Khan has died on the way to the hospital after falling ill in Patuakhali District Jail. According to prison sources, he was sent to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital on Friday (February 27) at around 3 pm after feeling chest pain. Later, when his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Barisal from there at around 5 pm. However, he died on the way. Shafiqul Islam Khan’s brother Zahidul Islam confirmed the death.
According to sources, on August 11 last year, the police arrested former Upazila Chhatra League president Shafiqul Islam Khan (38) in a case under the Special Powers Act of Operation Devil Hunt. After getting bail in that case, he was arrested again in two cases of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station. He has been in jail since then. Family sources said that Shafiq Khan had fallen ill several times before while in jail.
Patuakhali District Jail Jailer Md. Abdur Rob Mia said that when he felt sick in prison, prisoner Shafiqul Islam was first sent to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital. Later, he died on the way to Barisal from there. The Barisal prison authorities will complete the next process. When contacted, Muhammad Manjur Hossain, senior jail superintendent of Barisal Central Prison, said that the doctors at Barisal Hospital did not find him alive. He died on the way. The process of handing over the body is underway.
