Indian citizens advised to leave Iran

Amid fears of a possible US attack on Iran, India has asked its citizens in Tehran to leave the country immediately. In an emergency advisory on Monday (February 23), the Indian Ministry of External Affairs advised Indian citizens in the country to leave Iran immediately by commercial flights or other means.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran said on social media that the decision has been taken in view of the current changing situation in Iran. According to official estimates, there are currently about 10,000 Indian citizens in Iran. The advisory also said that those still in Iran should exercise maximum caution and avoid all forms of protests or mass gatherings. Citizens have also been requested to monitor the local situation and maintain regular contact with the embassy.
The advisory comes at a time when preparations are underway for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the visit as part of a “new coalition” to fight hostile forces in the Middle East. However, despite its close ties with Israel in the defense and technology sectors, India has historically maintained good relations with Iran, especially on strategic projects such as the development of Chabahar port.
New Delhi is believed to have taken this tough stance to ensure the safety of its citizens as the possibility of a US attack is high in the current tense situation.
