Gas line explosion in Halishahar, 4 completely burnt
Nine people, including a child, were burnt in an explosion at a house in Halishahar area of Chittagong city. The accident occurred on the third floor of a building called Halima Manzil in H Block of Halishahar early on Monday (February 23). Doctors said that the condition of all the burnt people is critical. Four of them have suffered 80-100 percent burns. All are being taken to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute of Chittagong Medical College (CMCH) Hospital.
The burnt people are Umme Ayan (10), Md. Shaon (17), Sakhawat Hossain (46), Md. Anas (7), Md. Shipon (32), Ayesha Akhter (4), Md. Sumon (40), Rani Akhter (40) and Pakhi Akhter (35). They are all from the same family. The three brothers and their wives and children live together in a rented house in Halishahar area. Among them, Sakhawat and his wife have suffered 100 percent burns. Shipon has 80 percent burns and his wife Rani has 100 percent burns. The rest have 25-45 percent burns.
Mohammad Jamshed, the cousin of the burnt Sakhawat, said, “After eating Sahri, there was an explosion from the elevator. My cousin’s house was connected to the elevator. As soon as the elevator exploded, the door broke and fire entered inside. The entire family was burnt. Doctors said that the condition of four people is critical. There is no ICU bed in Chittagong Medical College. So we will take everyone to Dhaka. Four ambulances have been arranged.
He also said, “My cousin’s entire family has left. Elder brother Sakhawat and younger brother Shipon have a car garage shop. Middle brother Suman used to live in Portugal. He came to the country last week.” He also died tragically today.” Fire service sources said that at 4:15 am, a massive explosion suddenly occurred in a flat on the second floor of the building. Upon receiving the information, three vehicles from Halishahar Fire Station quickly reached the spot and started fire control work. After about an hour and a half of effort, the fire was brought under control by 5:30 am.
Halishahar Fire Service Senior Station Officer Khalilur Rahman said that an explosion could have occurred due to accumulated gas. After the explosion, the injured were rescued and quickly sent to Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital. The explosion broke the walls and window glass of two flats on that floor.
Dr. Md. Asfaqul Asif, Registrar of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of CMC Hospital, said that the airways of all the injured have been burned. Their bodies have been burned from 25 to 100 percent. The condition of all those undergoing treatment is critical. We do not have dedicated ICU service here. Therefore, everyone is being sent to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka.
