Opposition leaders in parliament
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has been elected as the opposition leader in the 13th National Parliament. The decision was taken unanimously at a party meeting after the oath-taking of the parliamentarians on Tuesday (February 17).
Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has been appointed as the deputy leader of the opposition, while National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has been appointed as the chief opposition whip.
Earlier, Jamaat and its alliance parliamentarians took oath as members of parliament in the afternoon before Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin. It is noteworthy that before the oath-taking, there was some uncertainty over the issue of constitutional reforms. Jamaat had said that none of the party members would take oath as members of parliament if BNP did not take oath in the Reform Council. In this situation, they decided to take the oath in an emergency meeting.
