Tarique Rahman to vacate Bogra-6 seat
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has contested and won from Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 seats in the 13th National Parliament election. According to the law, even if elected to more than one seat, he can retain only one seat. In that case, the BNP Chairman has decided to vacate Bogra-6 seat and take oath as a member of parliament from Dhaka-17 seat. He has sent a letter to the Election Commission regarding the vacating of Bogra-6 seat. The EC is working to declare the seat vacant.
The Election Commission (EC) gave this information on Monday (February 16). EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said, we have received the letter regarding the vacating of Bogra-6 seat. However, the gazette in this regard has not been issued yet. According to the law, after a person is elected to two seats, he has to vacate one seat within a specified period and vacate the remaining seat or seats in writing.
According to RPO Section 19(1)(b), a person can be a candidate and elected from more than one seat in the same general election. Section 19(2) If a person is elected from more than one seat, he shall, within 30 days of the publication of the Gazette, state in writing which seat he wishes to retain. If the decision is not communicated within the specified period, the Election Commission of Bangladesh shall take action in accordance with the law and the remaining seat or seats shall be declared vacant.
