Awami League leader dies in Gaibandha jail
A banned Awami League leader has died in Gaibandha district jail. His name is Shamikul Islam Sarkar Lipon (55). He is the president of Palashbari Upazila Awami League and vice-principal of Palashbari Women’s Degree College. He died on the way from the jail to Rangpur Medical College Hospital late on Saturday (February 14). Prison sources said that Lipon fell seriously ill around 1 am yesterday. He died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital immediately.
Confirming the death, Gaibandha District Jail Jailer Md. Atiqur Rahman said that medical care was ensured immediately after he fell ill. First, he was taken to Sadar Hospital and later, he died on the way to Rangpur for advanced treatment. Lipon was suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and respiratory problems while in jail. He was undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College last month as well.
The prison authorities said that his body will be handed over to his relatives through Rangpur Central Jail after completing the necessary legal procedures. It is worth noting that Shamiqul Islam Lipon was arrested in Dhaka on December 8, 2024 in a political case. He has been in prison since then.
