Ishan wins final with grief
Ishan Kishan had to go through a terrible personal tragedy before the final match. Just two days before the T20 World Cup final, his cousin and brother-in-law died in a road accident.
According to a report in the Indian media ‘Times of India’, Kishan’s father Pranab Pandey could not watch the final match due to the accident last Friday. Kishan also wanted to go to be with his family, but due to the World Cup final responsibilities, it was not possible.
Before the final, Pranab Pandey had said, ‘A terrible incident has happened. We are in great danger.’ He added, ‘We are all in deep grief. Ishan wanted to come to us, but he could not come back because of the final. He is very broken.’
According to the report, Kishan did not look normal in the practice before the match. He did not do as much batting practice that day. Some of his Indian teammates came to console him.
But despite the burden of personal grief, Kishan put in a stellar performance in the final. Batting at number three, the left-handed batsman fearlessly scored 54 runs off just 25 balls. After completing his half-century, he raised his bat towards the sky, which many saw as a gesture of remembrance for his deceased relatives. Apart from batting, Kishan also made a significant contribution in the fielding. He took two brilliant catches in the outfield to dismiss New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra and Tim Seifert. Kishan was the fourth highest run-scorer in the tournament with 317 runs in nine innings.
