Appeal dismissed, Munshi will not be able to contest again

The Appellate Division has dismissed the leave to appeal filed by BNP candidate Manjurul Ahsan Munshi for the Comilla-4 constituency in the upcoming 13th National Parliament election. As a result, he will not be able to contest the election, lawyers said. The Appellate Division headed by the Chief Justice issued the order on Sunday (February 1).
Advocate Ahsanul Karim and Advocate Saifullah Al Mamun represented Munshi in the court. Advocate Mohammad Hossain Lipu and Advocate Zahirul Islam Musa represented Hasnat Abdullah. Earlier, National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate Hasnat Abdullah had applied to the Election Commission to cancel Manjurul Ahsan Munshi’s nomination papers, alleging loan default. After hearing the application, the Election Commission declared Manjurul Ahsan’s nomination papers cancelled on January 17 due to loan default.
Later, Manjurul Ahsan filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the validity of the Election Commission’s decision to cancel his nomination papers to restore his candidacy. The High Court dismissed the writ petition filed by BNP candidate Manjurul against the Election Commission’s decision to cancel his nomination papers in Comilla-4 constituency on charges of loan default on January 21. Later, he filed a leave to appeal application in the Appellate Division against the High Court’s order.
