Israeli strike kills news anchor in Lebanon

A presenter for Lebanon’s Al-Manar TV channel has been killed in an Israeli strike in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre, Qatar-based Al Jazeera news agency reported on Tuesday (January 27), citing the country’s armed group Hezbollah. The presenter, who was killed on Monday (January 26), was identified as Ali Nour al-Din. He worked for the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar TV.
In a statement, Hezbollah said the killing showed that Israel’s ongoing attacks on Lebanon were now targeting media workers. Al-Manar TV confirmed that Ali Nour al-Din had been killed in the Tyre strike. It said he had previously hosted religious events for Al-Manar.
Hezbollah also said that Ali Nur al-Din also served as the main religious preacher (khatib) in the al-Haoush area of the Tyre suburb. The group called his killing a “treasonous assassination”. Lebanese Information Minister Paul Marcos condemned the Israeli attack. In a post on social media, he said that journalists and media workers are not immune to the attacks.
He added, “We express our solidarity and condolences to the families of the journalists and call on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities, take urgent measures to stop these violations, and ensure the safety of Lebanese media workers.”
Before Ali Nur al-Din’s death, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said that at least six Lebanese journalists had been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon since 2023. However, some organizations put the number of journalists killed at 10.
Earlier yesterday, the Lebanese Health Ministry said one person had been killed in an Israeli airstrike in Tyre, but did not release his name. The ministry said two more people had been killed in separate attacks in the Kafr Rumman area near the city of Nabatieh.
