Police attacked while arresting AL leader, 4 injured
In Gaibandha, police were attacked while they were going to arrest Upazila Awami League Publicity and Publication Affairs Secretary and Katabari Union Parishad Chairman Jobair Hasan Shafiq Mahmud Golap. Four policemen were injured in the incident.
At the same time, the attackers vandalized two police motorcycles. However, the police could not arrest anyone in the incident. The incident took place at around 8:30 pm on Sunday (January 25) in the Bagda Bazar area of Katabari Union of the upazila. The injured policemen are Gobindaganj Police Station SI Selim Reza, SI Mir Kayes, SI Mominul and Constable Hossain. They were later rescued and admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.
Jobair Hasan Shafiq Mahmud Golap is an accused in a case filed under the Explosives Act for vandalizing and setting fire to a Jamaat office 14 years ago. He is the Propaganda and Publication Affairs Secretary of the banned Upazila Awami League and the Chairman of Katabari Union Parishad. His father’s name is the late Zulfikar Mahmud Khasru.
According to police and eyewitness sources, when the police went to arrest him at Golap’s house at night, Awami League leaders and activists trapped the police members inside the house and beat them up and vandalized the police motorcycle. Four police members were injured in this. Upon receiving the information, additional police led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (C-Circle) ABM Rashidul Bari went to the spot and rescued the injured. The army also patrolled the area at that time.
Confirming the matter, Gobindaganj Police Station OC Mohammad Mozammel Haque told us that four police members were injured in the attack and a police motorcycle was vandalized. The attackers fled. A case is under process against Chairman Golap and those involved and efforts are underway to arrest them.
It is worth noting that in 2014, a case was filed under the Explosive Substances Act, naming 11 people including Jobair Hasan Shafiq Mahmud Golap on charges of vandalism, arson and attempted murder at the Jamaat office. Eleven years after the incident, on November 14, 2024, Taharat Tanvir Pradhan, son of former Upazila Vice Chairman and Jamaat leader Nurunnabi Pradhan, filed the case as the plaintiff.
