Chinmoy Das, 39 others ordered to begin trial in Alif murder case
The court in Chittagong has ordered the start of the trial of 39 accused, including Sanatani Jagran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the main accused in the lawyer Saiful Islam Alif murder case. Today, Monday (January 19), the court of Chittagong Speedy Trial Tribunal (District and Sessions Judge) Md. Zahidul Haque issued this order for framing of charges.
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari and the rest of the accused were produced in the court at around 8:45 am today amidst tight security. Earlier, the army, police and intelligence agencies covered the entire Adalpara with security blankets.
According to court sources, tension spread in the Chittagong court premises over the bail hearing of Sanatani Jagaran Jote spokesperson and former ISKCON organizer Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in a sedition case filed on November 26, 2024, for insulting the national flag. At one stage of the clash, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was publicly beaten and hacked to death.
Jamal Uddin, the father of the deceased lawyer, filed a murder case naming 31 people. Five more cases were filed in the same incident on charges of attacking the police, obstructing government work, attacking lawyers and litigants, and exploding cocktails.
After a police investigation, a chargesheet in the murder case was submitted to the court on July 1, 2025. The chargesheet states that lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was killed at the instigation and instruction of Chinmoy Krishna Das.
According to the chargesheet, Ripon Das hit Alif on the neck twice with a stick and Chandan Das hit him with a kirich. Later, Alif, who was lying on the road wearing a white shirt and black pants, was beaten to death with sticks, bricks, and kirich. On August 25, the court accepted the chargesheet against 39 people including Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Earlier, on October 31, 2024, Firoz Khan, the then general secretary of BNP of Chandgaon Mohra ward of Chittagong city, filed a sedition case against Chinmoy Krishna Das and 19 others at the Kotwali police station on charges of insulting the national flag. Later, the plaintiff in the case, Firoz Khan, was discharged from the BNP. Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested from an area of Dhaka on November 25 in the sedition case.
