Trump threatens to impose tariffs on 8 European countries including Denmark over Greenland issue
US President Donald Trump has imposed a 10 percent tariff on exports from 8 more European countries to oppose the decision to occupy Greenland. The countries are Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Great Britain.
He gave this information in a post on Truth Social on Saturday (January 17). Trump said that an additional 10 percent tariff will be imposed on exports from all countries. This will be effective from February 1. In June, this tariff will increase to 25 percent. He said that European countries including Denmark have long enjoyed US aid and security benefits. Now it is time to give them back.
Regarding Greenland, Trump said that China and Russia are interested in occupying Greenland, and Denmark is unable to protect it. He claimed that Greenland’s security system is currently almost non-existent and no country other than the United States can ensure the security of the region. The tariff hike will remain in effect until the United States buys Greenland.
Meanwhile, several European leaders have condemned the US president’s decision. International relations analysts believe that Trump’s announcement could lead to renewed tensions in US trade and diplomatic relations with European countries.
