Huge explosion in madrasa, bomb-making equipment found
A huge explosion took place in a madrasa in Hasnabad area of South Keraniganj, Dhaka, around 10:30 am last Friday (December 26). The explosion blew away the walls of two rooms on the west side of the one-story building of Ummal Kura International Madrasa. Four people, including a woman and a child, were injured. Police said that cocktails, chemicals and various bomb-making equipment were found at the scene.
The CID’s Crime Scene Unit has given a list of equipment found at the scene. These include – alleged ball-type bombs, high-powered pipe bombs, shotgun lead bullets, white powder (alleged raw material for bomb making), chemical containers, electric drill machine, hammer, money counting machine, a silver-colored finger-step knife, handcuffs, spy cameras, various religious books, plastic penises, sex gel, glycerin, police belts, wireless set chargers, remote control key rings. The recovered cocktails were later defused by the bomb disposal unit at an empty lot in the Jhilmil area of South Keraniganj Police Station.
Yesterday, Saturday (December 27), Officer-in-Charge (OC) of South Keraniganj Police Station Saiful Alam told us that a bomb disposal team is working at the scene. The operation is still ongoing. Cocktails, flammable materials and bomb-making equipment have been recovered. A general diary (GD) has been filed at the police station in this regard. The crime investigation team and the bomb disposal team are also working to uncover the real cause of the incident.
Eyewitness CNG-powered autorickshaw driver Zakir Hossain said that suddenly a brick-like object hit his head with a loud noise. His head exploded and he bled profusely. He was later admitted to Ad-Din Medical College Hospital. The owner of the building, Parveen Begum, said that the construction of the building was completed in 2022. Later, a person named Mufti Harun rented the building to run a madrasa. Rent was being paid regularly for about three years. Alamin and his wife Asiya worked as teachers at the madrasa. Mufti Harun used to visit there occasionally.
The explosion shattered the furniture, window panes and blew away a section of the wall of the madrasa building. Pieces of glass and wall were scattered around. The building owned by Mohammad Hossain next door was also damaged. In the incident, two sons of madrasa teacher Alamin, Umayed (10) and Abdullah (8), his daughter Rabeya (6) and Zakir Hossain (45), an employee of a nearby CNG garage, were injured.
