Accused of beating a young man to death and hanging him on suspicion of theft

A local UP member, Selim Hossain, has been accused of beating a man to death and hanging him on suspicion of theft in Kashira village of Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat. Police recovered the body from inside the Kashira Bazar Hat office of Gopinathpur union of the upazila on Thursday (December 18) morning. The deceased, Sujan Hossain (27), is the only son of Osman Ali of Kashira Kumi village of Gopinathpur union of Akkelpur upazila. The accused is named Selim Hossain. He is a UP member of ward number seven of Gopinathpur union.
Relatives of the deceased and locals said that on Wednesday (December 17) afternoon, locals arrested a man named Sujan on charges of stealing money from the house of Quddus of Paikar Dariya village of Gopinathpur union of the same upazila. Later, UP member Selim Hossain reached the spot. In his presence, the locals beat up Sujan.
Later, the UP member, along with the village police, detained Sujan at the Kashira Bazar Hat office overnight. UP member Selim Hossain has been absconding since the incident. Police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to the Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital morgue. Shaheen Reza, officer-in-charge (OC) of Akkelpur police station in Joypurhat, said, “We went to the spot through the local UP member and recovered the body. Later, we prepared an autopsy report and sent the body to the Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital for autopsy.”
