Can Tarique Rahman contest elections – EC Secretary

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has said that although BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is not yet a voter, he can vote and contest the next parliamentary elections if the commission wants. He told reporters in front of his office at Nirban Bhaban in the capital on Monday (December 1).
Responding to a question from reporters whether Tarique Rahman has become a voter, the secretary said, “Not to my knowledge.” Then, when asked whether he (Tareque Rahman) can contest the elections, the secretary said, “You can, if the commission decides.” Responding to a question on the basis on which the commission will decide, Akhtar Ahmed said, “It is in the law. Asked about the specific law, he said, “You should see the Voter Registration Act, I don’t have it memorized.”
