Rajasakshi Mamun will not get the benefits of Division-1 in prison
Rajasakshi Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who was sentenced to five years for crimes against humanity in the July coup, is now in the special prison in Gazipur. Due to the sentence, his Division-1 benefits will be canceled as per the prison rules.
Now Rajasakshi Mamun will get the benefits of Division-2. Along with this, he will also have to wear prisoner’s clothes. Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Motaher Hossain confirmed this information. He said that if a prisoner of Division-1 is sentenced, he is automatically taken under Division-2. The convicted prisoner does not have the opportunity to get the benefits of Division-1 again.
However, the Inspector General of Prisons said that former IGP Mamun can now apply to maintain his division benefits. He said, “If the government approves it, he will get the benefits of Division-2. Otherwise, he will have to stay like a normal prisoner.”
According to prison department sources, prisoners in pending cases are given division benefits based on their social status and dignity. According to prison rules, there are three types of divisions. Division-1, Division-2, Division-3. Former persons of rank 1 to 18 in the Warrant of Presidency issued by the government get division as first class prisoners.
In addition, recipients of Bir Uttam, Bir Pratik, CIP, Swadhinata Padak and Ekushey Padak and Professor Emeritus appointments get Division-1. And other high-ranking prisoners are given Division-2 considering their social status, education and lifestyle.
A source said that there are more than 150 cases against former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun in various police stations and courts of the country so far. It is worth noting that Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was the 29th Inspector General of Bangladesh Police. He joined the BCS police cadre in 1982. He assumed charge as the Inspector General of Police on September 30, 2022. Before that, he served as the Director General of RAB. He was arrested on September 4, 2024.
