Germany to lift arms embargo on Israel if conditions are met

Germany has announced that it will lift its arms embargo on Israel. The decision, effective November 24, will see the country resume arms shipments to Israel. However, Germany said the decision would depend on the effectiveness of the Gaza ceasefire and the large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid. Germany also said the lifting of the embargo was due to a stable ceasefire in Gaza and recent diplomatic progress.
German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius said that a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas had been in effect since October 10. In addition, sustainable peace efforts and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza also influenced the decision. He said that Berlin would decide on the approval of each arms export on a case-by-case basis.
Another government spokesman said that the current ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was the basis for the decision. “We expect all parties concerned to adhere to the ceasefire agreement, in particular to maintain the ceasefire,” he said. This means that large-scale humanitarian aid flows must continue and the entire process must proceed in an orderly manner according to the agreement.
Earlier, on August 8, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz ordered a ban on the export of military equipment to Israel due to the war in Gaza. Berlin imposed the ban after Israel announced a full-scale ground operation and a halt to aid deliveries to Gaza. Meanwhile, the European Human Rights Commission (ECCHR) has been complaining that Germany’s arms exports violate international treaties, especially the Geneva Convention on the Prevention of Genocide.
