Police have recovered the body of a missing youth named Milan Akand (28) from the water of a drain filled with betel leaves in Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha. His body was recovered from a drain near Jahan (Nayapara) village near Khorddakomarpur union of the upazila on Monday (November 10) afternoon. The deceased Milan is the son of Dula Akand of Jahan village near that union.
Locals said that a young man wearing a jacket and lungi saw the body floating in the drain in the morning and informed the people around. Later, the locals informed the family and the relatives came and identified the body. On receiving the information, the police recovered the body from the spot. Locals also said that Milan often climbed the betel leaves of the people in the area and burned them. Several betel leaves and a ‘basket’ made of cloth used for climbing the tree were found next to the body. They believe that he may have died after falling from a tree while collecting betel nuts at night.
However, the deceased’s family claims that Milon was not involved in the theft. He did not return after leaving the house on Sunday afternoon. Despite an extensive search at night, he could not be found. This morning, his body was found in a drain next to the house. During this time, they visited the betel nut garden nearby and spoke to the locals. Later, the body was sent to the morgue of Gaibandha Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
