Mamdani offers Friday prayers in first visit as mayor
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani offered Friday prayers in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico on Friday (November 7). He joined worshippers at a mosque in the capital, San Juan.
He was greeted enthusiastically by worshippers at the mosque. After the sermon, the 34-year-old leader prayed shoulder to shoulder with ordinary worshippers. After the prayer, he was also seen distributing food to people.
Just two days ago, Zohran Mamdani won a historic victory in the New York City mayoral election. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to be elected mayor. More than two million votes were cast in the election, a record in the city’s history.
He traveled to Puerto Rico last Thursday to participate in the annual ‘Somos Conference’. The conference, held in San Juan, brings together New York politicians, policymakers and lobbyists each year. The conference features workshops and discussions, as well as informal networking opportunities.
This is Zohrab Mamdani’s first major political trip since the election. He will meet with key figures at the conference to discuss his administration’s plans. He is taking a team with him and has already formed a transition team at City Hall to form the administration. He will also attend a reception hosted by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was a major supporter of Mamdani’s campaign.
