Casino Samrat sentenced to life in prison
The tribunal has sentenced Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat, the expelled president of Dhaka Metropolitan South Jubo League, alias Casino Samrat, to life in prison in the Arms Act case.
Judge Md. Ibrahim Mia of Dhaka Special Tribunal-2 announced the verdict on Tuesday (October 28). However, an arrest warrant has been issued against the accused as he is absconding. Additional Public Prosecutor of the concerned tribunal, Billal Hossain, gave this information.
On October 6, 2019, RAB arrested Samrat from Chauddagram, Comilla. Later, a raid was conducted at his Kakrail office. During this time, a large quantity of foreign liquor, pistols and rare species of wild animal skins were recovered from there.
The mobile court sentenced him to six months in prison on the charge of possessing wild animal skins. The next day, on October 7, RAB-1 DAD Abdul Khalek filed a case under the Narcotics and Arms Act at Ramna Police Station. After the investigation, the investigation officer of the case, RAB-1 Sub-Inspector (SI) Shekhar Chandra Mallick, submitted the chargesheet in the arms case to the court on November 6, 2020.
The trial began with the framing of charges against Samrat on January 16. As the accused was not present that day, his bail was cancelled and an arrest warrant was issued. During the trial, the court recorded the testimonies of 10 out of a total of 14 witnesses. After presenting arguments on October 7, the court fixed today (October 28) to pronounce the verdict.
