Metrorail accident: Funeral of deceased Kalam completed
The funeral of Abul Kalam Azad, who died after a bearing pad of a Metrorail pillar fell in the capital’s Farmgate area, has been completed. His body was buried after the second Namaz-e-Janaza in Ishwarkathi village of Naria upazila of Shariatpur at 9 am today, Monday (October 27).
Earlier, his first Namaz-e-Janaza was held at the Baitul Falah Jame Mosque premises in Notun Ailpara area of Siddhirganj at 10 pm yesterday, Sunday. The deceased Abul Kalam Azad worked as a ticket seller in a travel agency in Dhaka. He lived in a rented house in Ailpara area of Siddhirganj, Narayanganj with his wife and two children. Abul Kalam, a pedestrian, died on the spot after a heavy bearing pad of the Metrorail fell in front of the Bangladesh Krishibid Institute adjacent to Farmgate Metro Station around 12 noon yesterday, Sunday.
Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mobarak Hossain told us that Abul Kalam was walking on the footpath in front of the Krishibid Institute under Farmgate Metro Station around 12 noon on Sunday. At that time, a bearing pad fell on him from above and he died on the spot. The body was handed over to the family after the autopsy. The metro rail was closed from 12:30 pm to 3 pm after the incident. Later, after checking the technical problem, the metro rail from Uttara to Agargaon continued to run normally. The metro rail will resume from 11 am today.
Government takes responsibility for Kalam’s family
Immediately after the accident, Road Transport and Bridges Advisor Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on Defense and National Integration Development Lt. Gen. (retd.) Abdul Hafiz, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) Managing Director Engineer Faruk Ahmed, Road Transport and Bridges Ministry and senior officials of DMTCL visited the scene.
Advisor Fauzul Kabir Khan said that a committee has been formed under the leadership of the Bridges Division Secretary to find out whether the incident was sabotage or due to construction defects. Regarding compensation to the family of the deceased, he said that the Metro Rail Authority will make all arrangements for the burial of the deceased Abul Kalam. His family will be given financial assistance of Tk 5 lakh. In addition, if anyone in his family is able to work, then he will be given a job in the Metro Rail according to his qualifications. The Metro Rail Authority has taken responsibility for his family.
