Joint operation in Indurkani and Bhandaria destroys banned nets worth Tk 3.5 lakh, jails 2 fishermen
A mobile court has sentenced two fishermen to 10 days in jail for violating the ban on catching Hilsa in the Kacha River in Indurkani and Bhandaria upazilas of Pirojpur. During this operation, banned nets worth about Tk 3.5 lakh were seized, burned and destroyed.
This joint operation was conducted under the overall supervision of District Fisheries Officer Sanjeev Sannamat at around 11 pm yesterday, Wednesday (October 15).
Indurkani Upazila Fisheries Officer Fahad Rahman, Bhandaria Upazila Fisheries Officer Syed Nazrul Islam and Parerhat Naval Police Outpost In-charge Prabir Kumar Biswas participated in the operation.
During the operation, about 6 thousand meters of current nets and 3 thousand 500 meters of Elisha nets were seized from the Kacha River. Later, the two fishermen were sentenced to 10 days in prison in a mobile court led by Bhandaria Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Ujjwal Haldar.
The convicts are Md. Babu (30), father- A. Barek Khan and Ibrahim (35), father- Mrityu Joynal Khan. Both of them have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
After the operation, the seized banned nets were burned and destroyed in the presence of the upazila administration.
Pirojpur District Fisheries Officer Sanjeev Sannamat said, “The administration, police and the fisheries department are working together to ensure that no one violates the law during the hilsa breeding season. Such operations will continue to protect hilsa.”
