11-day-old baby in jail with mother
The police sent Shahzadi from the hospital to the court as her physical condition improved. Last Sunday (September 21) afternoon, no one applied for bail on her behalf in the Khulna Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. No lawyer was present there. So, no hearing was held. Later, the court ordered Shahzadi to be sent to jail. Since there was no one to look after the 11-day-old baby girl, the police took Shahzadi to the Khulna District Jail. On September 11, Shahzadi (36), the wife of Sirajul Islam of Rampal, Bagerhat, gave birth to a baby girl in a hospital in the Rupsha area of Khulna metropolis. Earlier, they had four daughters. This time, the husband and in-laws were expecting a boy. Since there was no son, Sirajul left his wife in the hospital. After that, he did not listen to her anymore. On September 15, an incident occurred amidst the pressure and despair of the family. A four-day-old newborn baby of another mother was stolen from the same hospital. Within a few hours, CCTV footage and police action led to the rescue. The newborn, which was stolen from Shahzadi’s mother Nargis Begum (55), was recovered. She was then arrested.
A case was filed against Shahzadi and her mother under the Human Trafficking Act in this incident. Nargis Begum was arrested and sent to jail in the case. She has been in jail for the past 6 days. Shahzadi was undergoing treatment under police guard in a room. She claimed to the police that she did it to save her daughter’s family.
Hospital manager Enamul Haque said that the child’s father and maternal uncle brought the patient to the hospital on September 10. Earlier, they came to know about the birth of a boy through ultrasonography. The girl was born the next day through a cesarean section. Since then, the father Sirajul Islam has not come to the hospital.
He said that the child’s father and maternal uncle did not come to the hospital even on the day she was discharged last Sunday. A distant relative of Shahzadi has paid Shahzadi’s bill.
Shahin Kabir, the investigating officer of the case and SI of Sadar Police Station, said, “Since the accused has recovered, he has been produced before the court as per the law. I do not know what order the court has given.”
Bodhan Chandra Biswas (GRO-Sadar), SI of the prosecution department working at the Khulna Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, said, “No lawyer appeared for Shahzadi in the court. No one even applied for bail. As per the rules, the court has ordered the accused to be sent to jail. No one raised the issue of the child separately in the court. As per the rules, he has been allowed to stay with his mother on humanitarian grounds.”
