1 killed, journalist attacked in AL-BNP clash in Narsingdi
A clash and gunfire broke out between supporters of the banned Awami League and BNP over the issue of dominance in the remote Char area of Alokbali in Narsingdi. A man named Idon Mia (62) was killed in the incident. In addition, 5 more people were injured by gunfire and at least 25 others were injured. Three of them have been sent to Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital in a serious condition.
The clash took place in the remote Char area of Alokbali in Sadar Upazila early on Thursday (September 18). The deceased Idon Mia is a resident of Muradnagar village of Alokbali Union. He is said to be a supporter of the joint convener of the union BNP, Noab Ali.
Meanwhile, a journalist of Jamuna TV was attacked by the relatives of the deceased while he was collecting news of the incident. Later, he was rescued and treated at the hospital. There is dissatisfaction among the journalists in this incident.
Police and relatives of the deceased said that there was a dispute between Alokbali Union Awami League President Asad Ali and Union BNP Joint Convener Noab Ali over dominance in the area and extraction of sand from the Meghna River. In the meantime, Awami League leaders and activists fled the area after August 5. A year later, on Thursday (September 18), Awami League people tried to enter the village again in the early hours of the morning. When BNP people tried to stop them, a clash broke out with them. At that time, Awami League leaders and activists started firing indiscriminately at BNP leaders and activists. In this, one person named Idon Mia was killed. The injured were rescued and sent to various hospitals including Sadar Hospital. Tension spread between BNP leaders and activists and the locals after this incident. On the other hand, at around 10:45 am, relatives of the deceased attacked a journalist from Jamuna TV while he was collecting news of the incident. Several other journalists were injured while trying to save him. Later, he was rescued and treated at the hospital. There is extreme dissatisfaction among local journalists over the incident. Meanwhile, Narsingdi Model Police Station OC Emdad Hossain said about the incident, “One person was killed in a clash between two parties over dominance in the area. We are going to the spot after receiving the information. Details will be announced later.”
