15 dead in multi-storey building collapse in Maharashtra
Fifteen people have died after a residential building collapsed in Virar town in Palghar district of Maharashtra, India. A part of the building named ‘Ramabai Apartments’ collapsed on an empty rice field nearby shortly after midnight on Wednesday (August 28). According to the country’s media ETV India, a birthday party for a one-year-old child was going on on the fourth floor. At that time, 12 flats in one part of the building collapsed. Residents and guests were trapped under the rubble. The child also could not survive. According to the Palghar district administration, at least six people were injured in the accident. They are being treated at various local hospitals. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), firefighters and police members are participating in the rescue operation. Today (August 28), the work of removing the debris is continuing. Authorities said that the operation will continue until the rescue operation is completed. There is a fear that the death toll will rise further. It has been alleged that the multi-storey building was constructed without permission. There were already questions about the quality of the collapsed building.
