Narayanganj City Corporation announces budget of Tk 775 crore 33 lakh

With the goal of creating new revenue streams and not imposing additional taxes, Narayanganj City Corporation has announced a budget of Tk 775 crore 33 lakh 78 thousand 158 for the fiscal year 2025-26. Narayanganj City Corporation Administrator AHM Kamruzzaman announced the budget at a budget ceremony held at Nagar Bhaban on Thursday (August 28) afternoon. At the same time, he also called on customers at all levels to pay their arrears in the interest of urban development. Administrator Kamruzzaman said that the amount of the revised budget in the last fiscal year 2024-25 was Tk 544 crore 29 lakh 3 thousand 796. However, in line with the income, the expenditure in this year’s budget has been estimated at Tk 678 crore 93 lakh 57 thousand. There will be a surplus of Tk 96 crore 40 lakh at the end of the year. Narayanganj City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Md. Zakir Hossain presided over the budget ceremony, which was attended by urban planner Md. Mainul Islam, leaders of various political parties in the district, prominent citizens, professionals, journalists and representatives of civil society. At the ceremony, journalists, politicians and representatives of civil society from different levels of the district raised various problems including traffic congestion, waterlogging, violence by battery-powered autorickshaws, footpath encroachment by hawkers, illegal stands for vehicles, extortion from hawkers and autorickshaws, and excessive collection of WASA water bills, and also raised questions about the quality of citizen services. In response, Narayanganj City Corporation Administrator Kamruzzaman said, “In order to develop Narayanganj as a planned, clean, green, environmentally friendly, healthy and poverty-free city, various long-term development plans have been adopted in the new budget considering a period of at least twenty years.” Among these, special priority has been given to permanent resolution of traffic congestion and waterlogging in the city, development of waste and drainage management, dengue control, canal excavation, installation of deep tube wells, development in education, health and sports sectors. In addition, e-trade license, e-water bill, e-certificate services will be introduced digitally through e-software to build a simple, modern and technology-based tax and revenue system. Informing that the work on the Kadam Rasul Bridge construction project on the Shitalakshya River at a cost of 735 crore 18 lakh taka with government funding for the development of the communication system has already started, the administrator of Narayanganj City Corporation said, “If the bridge is implemented, people on both sides of the river will find relief in their lives. In addition, if the ongoing projects including drain construction, sewage line construction and canal excavation are implemented to resolve waterlogging, the city residents will enjoy permanent benefits. Besides, the construction of 34 street memory stands named after the martyrs of the July-August uprising last year is underway in the areas under the jurisdiction of the City Corporation to commemorate their sacrifices. The construction of 15 of them has already been completed. Besides, four graves in different cemeteries will be preserved under this budget.
