In the wake of Trump’s strong comments, Russian President Putin is visiting India this month
Russian President Vladimir Putin is coming to India soon, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said on Thursday (August 7). Doval, who is in Moscow, said the date of the visit has not yet been finalized, but Interfax news agency reported that it is likely to happen by the end of August. The visit is taking place amid heightened tensions between New Delhi and Washington over India’s trade relations with Russia. US President Donald Trump signed a new executive order on Wednesday. In it, an additional 25 percent duty has been imposed on imports from India due to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil. The 50 percent duty has been imposed on India. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has called the additional US duty unfair and unreasonable. Meanwhile, the United States has threatened to impose secondary tariffs on Russian oil buyers if Moscow does not agree to end the war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, by Friday. The Kremlin also said on Thursday that Putin was also scheduled to meet Trump in the coming days. Yuri Ushakov, the Russian president’s foreign affairs adviser, said the two sides were working to arrange a meeting and had agreed on a venue, but that it would be announced later.
