Italian Prime Minister to visit Dhaka, ‘potential for major progress’ on migration issue

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit Dhaka on August 30 for a two-day visit. It is learnt that the migration issue will be given special importance during her visit. Foreign Ministry sources said that the Italian Prime Minister’s visit will be the first visit to Dhaka by a top European leader during the interim government. Giorgia Meloni will meet with the chief advisor on August 31. An inter-ministerial meeting was held at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday (July 20) regarding the Italian Prime Minister’s proposed visit. The meeting was presided over by Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam. An official from the Foreign Ministry told the media that the Italian Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to Dhaka could bring major progress on the migration issue. In addition, there is an opportunity to discuss bilateral relations, trade, defense and other issues during her visit. Earlier, the then Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi visited Dhaka in 1998. That visit was the first visit to Dhaka by an Italian Prime Minister. Now, Giorgia Meloni will be the second Prime Minister of Italy to visit Bangladesh.
